Hello
I was wondering, if I could manage to get an overdrive for second gear. The reason is, our roads on the island scarcely allow faster speeds than 40 miles, more often between 20 and 30. Usually that means second is just too overrevd and third is not strong enough for acceleration. So a second with overdrive would probably by ideal. I was writing to «Odspares», the company who deals with the Normandelaycox overdrives and got the following response:

working in 2nd.
Has anybody here had any experience with such work? Or is my idea basically wrong?

I'm with arrocuda on this..
It was indeed inhibited on first and second so no damage was caused on acceleration.
I never use my overdrive on harder acceleration in any gear...
But that being said, you could "by-pass" all this by just feeding the solenoid with power whenever you want... making it possible to engage in all gears..
This also means engaging when in reverse... this could be dangerous.. because I believe an overdrive stuck on, could "explode" into pieces when reverse gear is engaged and the car is driven backwards...

Not sure if this is any help but all early triumph tr6's had overdrive on 2nd 3rd and 4th.

In theory overdrive on all gears is possible but as far as I'm aware the overdrive is disabled in 1st and 2nd gears so as to prevent too much torque damaging the gear drive shaft within the unit itself. Could be wrong but no doubt others will be along soon to confirm/deny as to whether this is the case or not.
