I once lost a Rover 287 in the UK-Police-Specifications due to a broken time belt. I was after we moved from Switzerland with this car to Scotland and used it here. One Christmas time we went up to friends in the hinderland of Banff. When wie drove towards the town I heard a little noise and everything died. The AA man told us, that it must be the time belt and brought the car to the next Rover Garage. There I was told, I have to choices, to sell them the car for some £4000 or try to put up a new engine for about the same amount. In Switzerland, if you bring a car to a Marque Garage, usually all the service checks and repairs are made automatically, only with excessive cost is before the start of work a communication with the owner usual. Here, the Garagejohnny told me, that I should have told him to exchange the belt and so it is my own guilt. (I bought then as Saab Turbo.)

Due with this experience, I think I should rather ask, if this could also happen with the Fastback and in what periods the time belt and others belts and chains should be exchanged.

Thanks a lot for your responses.

Best greetings from the Isle of Arran in Scotland.
And proud to vote for an independent Scotland. YES! YES! YES!

Timing chain noise is a light rattle from front of engine and is usually there on start up and on engine over run, don't normally hear it when you rev engine up. Have you no sound deadening on underside of bonnet? They should have a sound deadening mat underneath the bonnet.

Thanks a lot. I will then ask the Garage as I do have some hollow noise. The car is quite loud in the interior, making listening to music or the radio rather futil. Would it help to have a layer of some sort on the underside of the bonnet?

Best greetings from the Isle of Arran in Scotland.

No timing belts on the fastback, only alternator belt, so you can visually check that for wear. Fastback engines have timing chains, usually no trouble unlike a timing belt. Normally replaced with an engine rebuild or if they get noisy, you do get some audible warning of wear.
