Have noticed recently that after a little while, half an hour or so, the oil temperature rises up to 100'C and with anything other than gentle toddling along will continue to rise getting upto 110'C.
I never noticed this before I did an oil and filter change but this could just be a coincidence.
Pressure when cold is 50-60 and when hot 20 at idle and 40 while driving. 20 seems a bit low to me but it's consistent and pops straight back up to 40 as soon as the revs come up, but the temp is worrying me.
Any thoughts folks?

Re J's gauge only showing 80 degrees, mine would do this if just driving round town or shortish runs, it was only on the high speed stuff that it rose, but then quite significantly as described.
Yes, I've heard that it is best to have a stat within a cooler, such that 80 degrees needs to be reached before oil is passed around it because, yes, over-cooling is not a good idea either.
It could be J's gauge is under-reading, but taking the dash out just for that seems too much work - just use it as an indicator of relative temperature if it is indeed under-reading. Hope that makes sense! Cheers. G |

One thing I did see is that coolers fitted with a thermostat open at 80'C.
Coincidence or is yours just the only one that works right 😮

My temp gauge is very slow to read and doesn't go above 80 degrees. Is this a fault with the gauge or could that be right? Water temperature is always steady just under Normal thanks to a new larger core radiator and a thoroughly flushed out system. Cooler water temperature would perhaps keep oil temps lower but how low is too low?!

Hi Glen, Very reassuring that it's not just me and this is a Rapier "thing".
Will definitely be on the look out for an oil cooler setup so if anyone has any leads send them this way please.

Yes, echo what Dave has said. Mine used to run at a bout 110/120 on a motorway blast at say a steady 80, but pressure was fine.
There was a comment about it on the original road test, but Chrysler said it wasn't a problem if the recommended (Shell) oil was used. Funny though that in the latter couple of years they deleted the oil temp gauge & replaced it with the ammeter from the standard car. I would fit a cooler & the one from the Alpine (Sports) is a good option, but doesn't take too much to have one made up these days using air-eqip hoses, but you need the oil filter base plate with the take-offs as you suggest.

Cheers Dave, kinda worrying when it's running at about 80% of Max but yes your right the pressure never drops below 20 when idleing.
May add an oil cooler to the long term wish list though ☺
Does the one from the Alpine feed from a revised filter mounting plate? Don't suppose you have one amongst your collection?

as long as the pressure stays over 20psi you're ok, mine doesnt :(
as for oil temp, mine has alway run high, i cured this with an oil cooler off a sunbeam alpine, fitted an alloy sump (vented) and changing the gearbox for a 6 speed unit for better "legs" on long trips out.
