I'm looking for an original air filter assembly for a 28/36 Weber carburettor, as fitted originally to these cars. Any condition as I can probably overhaul it.

Hi Jim,
If you do go for the K & N 56-9005 option you can save a bit of cash by getting one from Demon Tweekes amongst others on e bay,listed as being for Cortina GT,less than £66.00.
No worries about success or otherwise,call in for a coffee if your passing.

Well that was what I wrote that I am not sure if this route,constructing something to connect the plenum to the carburettor,is working. So that is something you have to try to make yourself. But I should go for the option John has shown, the K&N filter 56-9005 on his 28/36 DCD. With this filter you reach what you are aiming at: reducing the noice.
I like your suggestion regarding the recording on the phone, I might try out that myself at the first opportunity. |

I suspect what your friend has is actually the 32/36 DGV kit we supply via the Alpine owners club. This uses our remote plenum seen
here http://www.webcon.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=8939&bc=no along with the related duct hose and an Alpine Owners club supplied
air filter.
The problem here is that the top of the DCD is different to the top of the DGV, and we don’t have a plenum kit to suit the DCD.
It may be possible to modify the plenum to suit the DCD, but we have never tried this so cannot advise.

I've now emailed Webcon and anxiously awaiting their reply.Incidentally your remark about companies obviously not interested in your enquiry.Whenever I speak to anyone on the phone I've found recently that there is a recording informing you that the call will be recorded for "training purposes". I then inform the first person to actually speak, that I am recording the call too. You get some amazing reactions!!

Well that will be no free coffee for you Jim, because in the meantime I have found this particular filter on www.knfilters.com for the price of 70,79 GBP. When you approach the website just type in the parts number and click on search and then you will see this filter including a nice image of it.
Good luck with and......never trust some guy in a company who obviously is not interested enough to help you.

Hi Jim,
Regarding your search for a filter there are a few things you could investigate:
first: ask John C for the K&N filter parts number. Each K&N-air filter has a specific parts number and by that number you could possibly find what you need.
second: a very expensive solution is to swap the existing inlet manifold plus carburetor for the so called Webcon conversion. On my Rapier this conversion is installed and the filter system is constructed by help of a plenum on the carburetor, a big hose and a K&N-filter at the end of the hose in front of the car. I can send you a picture if you wish.
third: buy the plenum plus hose from Webcon and try to construct something to connect the plenum with your Weber 28/36 DCD. The plenum is made for a Weber 32/36 DVG 5 A. I don't know if this last route is possible, but you could ask Webcon about it.

Hi Jim,
Interesting response from K & N,whilst I agree it does not subdue all the noise it is certainly better than the pancake filter it replaced.
As the carb is not an original fitment maybe there is not an ideal solution but more of a compromise.The noise I now get is not a loud roar but a muted 'suction' noise under heavy acceleration.
Have you tried the Alpine owners website as they share the same engines etc etc and there may be something on there relating to this topic.
Incidentally in my research the overriding opinion was that pancake filters offer poor filtration and for that reason alone a K & N is a worthwhile upgrade.

p.s.just a thought,K & N are probably comparing their filter with OE,
maybe sourcing a filter off a car with a 28/36 fitted as OE is an option.I think some Ford GTs of the 60s had them but suspect they may be a bit hard to find. |

Well! Armed with this information I emailed K&N, here is their reply:--
Hi Jim,
Thanks for the enquiry,
Unfortunately K&N do not manufacture a filter that will supress the intake noise for this vehicle.
Most likely the noise will be the same or possibly even louder with a K&N bolt on fitted.
If you are interested in a K&N we would also need to know the carb model (DCD, DAS) to quote a part number and price.
I'll follow other leads and report. I always saw the Rapier as a relatively quick car, and also luxurious. Intake roar is not as popular with me now that I'm an old man!

P.S. just had another thought,when I fitted the Weber I re-jetted it and fitted the correct Venturi tubes for the 1725cc engine,I seem to recall I got the parts from Fast Road Cars. |

Thank you John. The unacceptable roar is what I'm trying to stop.
I'll investigate your suggestion and hopefully cure the problem. Peter (in Holland) ever helpful, has emailed me with some more facts about my series V carburettor. I'm on a steep learning curve! Always a Ford man in racing, when I had money. My wife then raced a Mini, so I was quite
at home with Austin A series engines. Sunbeam was totally mysterious to me.

Hi Jim,
The Series IV and V cars were fitted with Solex carbs as standard,a Weber28/36 is a common and beneficial upgrade,but will not take an original air filter.
I have a 28/36 on my 1725cc engine SIV and fitted a 'pancake' chrome foam filled filter from Speedograph Richfield but found this created an unacceptably loud induction noise.After much research and seeking opinions from forum members I have now fitted a K & N filter which is much more acceptable in every respect.
