I am thinking of changing my existing fuel pump on my 1973 Rapier Fastback, to an electric one. Has anyone done this and can they give me some advice please? I hear that this can cause problems if you fit the wrong type.
You could use something like an SU type electric pump as fitted to lots of early '60,s '70,s cars, Triumph Stag, Some Jags etc. Earlyish Petrol Sherpa vans/ Rover 214/216 had a nice little compact unit about the size of a plastic fuel filter that was fitted in line up at the back of the car. I had this type fitted on my Pinto powered Ford Pop......never gave an ounce of trouble. On the electrical side, you should fit a relay AND a fuel cut off inertia switch for safety in the unlikely event of a collision. Its a bit trial and error, but you may also need a fuel regulator.
