When the engine is running depress the clutchpedal, if the engine is going down in revoltutions (or stalling) you could expect the thrustwashers are below the limit. Changing them is possible with the engine in situ. Regards, Peter
Try to pull & push the crank pulley to and fro towards the front & rear of the car.....shouldn't be any end float as such. Just thinking, worse case scenario that the crank thrusts may have worn allowing the crank to move forwards and backwards which would appear as a wobble when engine is running. Had this problem years ago on a Super Minx.
Don't really know but maybe the key that holds the pulley on the crank is worn.. OR you can feel if the fan is loose or the waterpump shaft is worn... Same goes for the alternator shaft and bearings...
Giving them a spin by hand..
One way of testing these is taking everything of (fan belt and pulley) and starting the car for a second if the noise disappears there are 3 possibilities: alternator, pulley as you were thinking or the waterpump...
If it doesn't disappear it might be something more concerning.. being internal..
Did the engine idle at normal engine speeds?

So, as is often the way with classic car ownership the delight from yesterday's successful MOT test has been replaced by worry!
Drove the car out the garage again this morning and noticed a slight knocking noise. On hands and knees under the front of the car and the noise seemed to be coming from the crank pulley which appeared to be a bit wonky. Not wanting to leave the engine running and potentially do more damage I pushed the car back in and came indoors thoroughly deflated!
Any ideas what the problem is likely to be and more importantly how difficult it would be to remedy?
Wonky pulley?
