I know an Iranian guy called Shahin who now lives in the US but is nutso about Paykans and Hunters. He bought a '68 Gazelle here and had it imported to the states a couple of years ago. He has a blog site where he writes about Paykans and other Hunter derivatives www.paykanhunter.com ...well worth checking out. Or you can email him shahin@paykanhunter.com
I have spoken to him a few times as he also has an interest in Rapier f/b's (naturally), and he told me that it was tough to get a complete car out of Iran but you never know... he might have a contact back home that can sneak small parts out.
Building the 'Mark II' fastback Rapier ('Arrocuda'). |

yes, I saw yesterday how it works, sort of. But to change the idler with the steering box, does the steering box need to be in perfect condition, or do you only need to have the worm and box in good condition, or also the internal drive gear?

I started down this route myself as I thought that a Paykan box might prove a useful source of new spare parts for the steering box.
I looked around at Indian suppliers as they might make them (but found only truck units). I did find a manufacturer in Iran but they didn't answer my email.
Then I discovered the twist is the other way - you could use the parts but you have to turn the steering wheel the wrong way
I think they also make back axles and a few other bits. It would really useful if it was possible to buy stuff from them. So if you have Iranian friends it might be worth seeing if they have any contacts there.

The box casing is a mirror image. Some of the internals are the same but the nut and worm twist the other way - but that doesn't matter if you are just using it as an idler.

I haven't looked into it in any great detail but I think the only difference between the RHD & LHD steering box is the fixings, ie the internals are interchangeable between RH & LHD?
You are correct, I do want to swap the idler with a LHD box to improve the steering.
If you do hear of one then please let me know.

Hi Jason, not that bad that you haven't been able to take pictures. To bad you can't come. What do you need from the steering box, do the internals have to work? I suppose you are going to upgrade your steering system by putting the box from a LHD car on? I don't know if you need everything for it... Perhaps going to do the same on mine. Cheers Thomas

Hi Thomas, sorry I haven't managed to get any photos yet (long story)! Not going to the rootes spares day unfortunately, we have a stand at a local show which I have to attend. I will try to get some photos this week for you. By the way, I would like to get my hands on a LHD steering box if you ever hear of one going spare. Cheers for now,
Jason.

Hello JPSH120 It's been a while now, but I was wondering if you are coming to the spares day at the Rootes archive center? We surtenly are, and if you are coming could you bring the manifold with you so that we can have a look at it and decide if we want to buy it. cheers!

Thomas - I have one I would sell to you, but it would need a small repair at the joining end.
Let me know if you're interested.

Sure, I'm interested... What's a small repair? Can you perhaps post a picture?
