Hi I am new to sunbeam rapiers its a 4 (1964) i enjoy driving the car but would like to change the valves in the cyl head so it runs on unleaded fuel, change the points for electronic ignition and maybe reprofile the cam.
Have any members made these changes? if so where do i get the parts etc. John Stockport

Hi John,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Series Rapiers.
As far as I know the engines are OK with unleaded without any work on the head, valves and/or valve seats seats.
I have fitted a Simon BBC electronic distibutor to my SIV which I am happy with.
As far a re-profiling the cam I can't help with that one but I am sure there will be members who will offer advice.
Regards
John

Hi John,
Why don't you try the Webcon conversion as offered from the Sunbeam Alpine Owners Club. You can by them from Jerome Senn and in Practical Classics form oktober there is a review of this system.
On my Rapier Series 4 this system is just installed. I haven't drivenit yet because the car is still in the situation of repairs.
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter
I just tried to find it on cited website. Could you send a link to the Conversion? That would be great. Thanks.

Hi Arran,

This conversion will not work for fastback Rapiers, because the engines are canted. The conversion implies a Weber 32/36 carburettor plus a special designed intake manifold.
If you are interested to read more about it then go to www.saoc.demon.co.uk and follow the links: Links & Forum, Club Forum, Carburettors & Eddie Zetlein. From there on take you pick regarding several links which has to do with the Carburettor and the manifold. You can read there too the whole history about designing this manifold for SAOC. This conversion is suitable for Rapiers Series 3, 3A, 4 and 5, though not for the canted engines like the ones in the fastback Rapiers.
Best regards,
Peter

OK, thanks Peter. You gave me the correct answer on a nonspoken question. That's it then for me.

Best greetings from the Isle of Arran in Scotland.

I would have liked to wildly tweak my ser3 too , but it would have cost me an arm and a leg, so I did what I could which entails a 1725cc engine and matching box, ( I think it's from a Sceptre ) twin sidedraught webers off ebay - from a H120 - modified inlet manifold ( to get the carbs level ) made my own 4 into 1 exhaust manifold and electronic ignition .
I add a little two stroke oil to every tank of fuel in case the valves don't like the fuel.
My Rapier goes very well , and I am happy .
