Morning everyone,
After the engine on my '73 Fastback started leaking rather badly and fixing the side cover didn't help as much as I wanted I decided to take the engine and gearbox out as the gearbox was also leaking. I'm now going to do the sump gasket and every other gasket on the engine (front oil seal especially) Aswel as a complete gearbox overhaul
I also found a very worn clutch bearing, cover and plate which will now need replacing. (70 000 miles over 20 years) Sadly I couldn't find a new one in my spare parts and Speedy spares don't even list them... Is there anyone who can tell me: - a supplier who does have a new clutch cover and plate for sale? - or an alternative that is readily available
Or if need be can someone tell me what is necessary to fit the Heavy duty clutch (H120, GLS..) apart from large diameter clutch plate and clutch cover?

Hi Tom,
Speedy Spares do them! (listed under the Hunter section, give them a call - they'll sort one out for you.
To upgrade to the H120 clutch you will need; 1. flywheel, it's chunkier! 2. 8.5" friction plate 3. pressure plate for same 4. carbon or roller thrust washer depending on pressure plate.
speedy spares sell the clutch kit (without flywheel) for £150 and thats with the roller type bearing - i have one fitted to mine.

Always worth giving the guys at speedy spares a call even if you can't find what you want on their website. I've managed to get quite a few bits and pieces off them that must have been at the back of the darkest cupboard!

Don't forget the club spares: Whilst I'm not officially doing it, I will try and help on a best endeavours basis to get bits for members when I visit stores now and then. Sales help the income and enable us to get bits re-manufactured: like rear screen & quarter seals . Cheers. G |

I know Glen, I did think about the club spares but I need the clutch as soon as possible as she is my daily driver I'm now using my dad's triumph dolomite sprint) which isn't the problem but the faster she's back on the road.. the better!!
I contacted speedy spares and various other suppliers but none of them have the standard clutch unit....

Hi Thomas,
Try Rootes parts in the Netherlands, the last time I bought a clutch there they had clutches for the Hunter range too.
Regards,
Peter |

Or a simple Google search for classic car clutch kits brings up several results.

Have you had any luck yet, Tom?
There is a nos cover plate on eBay, item number 311329415381.
They might post overseas if you ask, if not I could buy it and send it to you.

Sorry, everyone I've been offline for a while now...
The clutch has been replaced with a NOS one from a local supplier who will probably have a couple others to.. I took the engine completely apart except for the crankshaft and pistons.. She was leaking quite badly so after replacing every single gasket she was still leaking so the one not replaced because of the magnificent running of the engine was the head gasket which had started leaking externally because of its age (over 20 years)
The gearbox is now also completely leak free after a complete rebuild by mysef with all new gaskets internal of the overdrive included and front and rear bearing were also replaced due to wear..
Refurbished Strombergs give the car much more enjoyable driving aswel as fuel economy!
Above al that the front differential oil seal also ensured a leak free diff complete with all new oil. 2 new rear wheel cilinders and brake shoes because of a leaky wheel cilinder checked the brakes of my list of things to do... BEWARE of glued brake shoes, because my wheel cilinder had been leaking into the brake drums for over 2 months of standing still, the brake fluid had started working the glue which caused the brake lining to losen up from the brake shoe itself causing it to slip of and crumble into a lot of small pieces which saw me limping home on a sunday afternoon..
All this means the car is ready for its 800 mile round journey from Belgium to the UK for the Nationals!!! Hope to see you all there!!!
