As I was halfway there in the process of replacing the rear shocks & springs I've taken the rear axle out to give it a good clean and coat of paint. Where the diff housing bolts to the axle there appears to be a minor leak. Question is, if I undo all the bolts can I remove the diff housing to replace the gasket or do half shafts need to be removed etc?

Yes, you will have to pull the shafts out Good tome to replace the halfshaft bearings !

Thanks for the reply Andy. I didn't want to get into bearing replacement at this stage, was hoping I could just cure the leak in the interim. Do you know if I would be able to move the diff housing enough to clean the gasket and add some sealant?

i have never tried it but i doubt it, at best you may get a few mm of a gap.

Currently having the same problem, tried to take the half shafts out and it was right near impossible even with a proper slide hammer. Gave up in the end, will have to try again soon with some heat... Good luck.

If I remember correctly (it's a long while since I did this) once you've got all the bolts out of the back plate the only thing holding the half-shaft in is the spring clip at the diff end. It should come out without too much effort - maybe I had a bigger slide hammer

I managed to find a very kind chap, who for £10 has welded the broken part of the Weber, by building up an entire new arm for the float valve. I now need to drill a hole and some how secure the spine of the float so it doesn't work loose. But still another step forward.
By the way in doing this i found out that the webers are made from aluminium and not a zinc alloy as i originally thought.
Also that kind chap who was sorting the manifold for me has become uncontactable so I guess im on the lookout for another supplier, unless he does get back to me
