Hi All, I have a Rapier mark 4, 1600cc twin choke solex carb.
My problem is that my engine starts great when cold and runs a treat, but once the temp is up to normal the engine stops, and will not start again until it has cooled down. I have fitted electronic ignition, blown out entire fuel line. My feeling is that the fuel is evaporating when hot, but not sure, has anybody else had this problem? and hopefully suggest a cure as I am at my witts end.

Hello Brian.
I had a similar problem with my Series IIIA,
and all sorts of remedies were suggested by the kindly folk on the Forum.
Have a look at http://www.sunbeamrapier.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=662
The end result was that the twin carbs (albeit Zeniths) needed tweeting and balancing.
Oops! I've re-read your post and seen that you have a twin choke carb rather than twin carbs, so you might want to disregard my ramblings.
I'm not allowed to delete my post.

Hi,

I should first try to rule out any possibility of a vacuum leak which may occur when metals are expanding when getting hot. Last year I expericienced with my Rapier series 4 a case of a vacuum leak which was caused by the ventilation valve (situated on the inlet manifold). The problem of stalling of the engine occured when the engine was hot.
This is just an example of a place where a vacuum leak is shown.
Another quick check is: the emulsion tubes c/w correction jet. I have sseen several times that the emulsion tubes of this carburettor are broken and the result was that problems were experienced when the engine was hot.
Before I forget it: did you check for a spark when the engine stalled while hot? Some modern rotors have a habit to fail when hot or it could be the coil too. Did the problem start right after you changed to electronic ignition?

Regards,

Peter
